“And I would foolishly desire”

And I would foolishly desire
That every feeling should expire,
That I would think of you no more.
Without you, I was sailing, flying,
And writing poetry, and crying –
But I still saw you as before.

Listen to the song

And I would foolishly desire
That every feeling should expire,
That I would think of you no more.
Without you, I was sailing, flying,
And writing poetry, and crying –
But I still saw you as before.

I lived like all. Amid long chases,
I left behind the nights, the places,
The towns, the meetings, the events.
I lost the date. Forgot the venue.
Yet memory would still retain you –
Exactly like you were back then.

What do I get from all this bother?
There is no you and me, but rather,
At sunset time, as darkness falls,
There’s me – all new, there’s you – surrendered,
One whom I couldn’t have remembered,
Who won’t remember me at all.

But to come back you are still bound,
As you turn nervously around,
When suddenly there’s something wrong,
And light gets low along that roadway
Where two blest fools are running oddly
Towards each other for so long.
